My name is Jess, and my journey began around the age of 7, enlisted to help my two uncles during summers. Artisans & craftsmen both, they inspired me to give trees a dignified second life by creating natural wood artworks, live edge furniture and wooden light fixtures. I'd like to think of my work as a celebration of wood, for within each slice there lies an opportunity to preserve and share yet another universe of remarkable beauty.
Developing Tools for my Trade
While attending community college in my ealy 20's and taking courses in drafting and engineering, I made a friend who seemed equally as passionate about woodworking, art, live edge furniture and design. We quickly fell into discussions about improving tools to enhance our quality of work, and after much deliberation we decided to collaborate on a prototype for a next generation carpenters level which had the capability to expand in length without losing accuracy. Shortly after developing a working model, we were able to raise money and start a factory in Hailey, Idaho. I named the company Levelution, and soon after we found our products featured in media publications and began shipping worldwide. After nearly a decade, we sold the company and I returned to my woodworking passion, with the satisfaction that I had helped in some way to make an improvement in acurracy in the building trade.
A Tale of Artistic Inspiration
In 2013, while working out of my studio in Los Angeles at the time, I made friends with a surrealist artist who worked in multiple esoteric mediums and one piece in particular got my attention. He had figured out some method to use an obscure material like toilet seat covers in this case, with precise folds and creases in such a manner that they took on the appearance of translucent origami entities flying through black space. Having been so moved and captivated by this work I gave some thought about how I might similarly capture the beauty of wood while realizing I would have to create a specific technique of my own. After several months of trial and error using different resin compounds and methods, I was able to finally acheive what I considered to be an acceptable result, thus the discovery of Wood Mixed Media.
The process begins with an idea and a high quality substrate. It then proceeds as a combination between something sculptural and an assemblage. With a great deal of care, attention to detail and a touch of luck, it finishes in the end like a painting.
Since that point of initial discovery, I contnue to work on refining my technique while keeping an open mind to pursue unique subject matter and other possible methods. For in this equation there is only one absolute:
It's always the wood that has the final say.
